St Luke’s CE Primary delighted to win Environmental and Sustainability Award
St. Luke’s CE Primary School is thrilled to have won the Environmental and Sustainability Award at the prestigious Northamptonshire Education Awards. Over the past five years, the school’s eco team, led by Deputy Headteacher Katie Marks, has been a driving force for positive environmental change. Their commitment has earned them Green Flag status with distinction for the last three years.
The entire school community works seamlessly together to promote sustainability, with initiatives such as recycling bottle tops, crisp packets, stationery, and batteries. The school has also focused on reducing energy consumption through measures like "4-minute showers," walking to school, and holding monthly "Switch Off Afternoons," where all non-essential electricity is turned off for an entire afternoon.
In addition to these efforts, the eco team has played a vital role in raising awareness of local environmental issues. One notable project involved creating a toad crossing sign to protect local toads whose habitat had been displaced due to nearby construction. The eco team has also brought global environmental challenges into the spotlight, inspiring the school with their work on endangered species.
The esteemed panel rightly spoke glowingly of St Luke’s Eco Team:
“The judges were impressed by the development of life skills being taught through environmental factors, including recycling and energy efficiencies, as well as the more global impact, linked to the natural world and embedding the importance of sustainability.”
Congratulations to the whole team!
